Considering how deep the channel is, this was a shame. From this point on, along the trail, you are entertained by the huge waterfall coming out of Copper Lake. Even if you're just day hiking, I highly recommend lots of water and sturdy and supportive shoes. Overall, the trip was special and perfect in every way. I was a bit apprehensive to do much exploring since we got a bit of a later start than I wanted and we had already decided to camp at Copper, so we didn't take the Malachite side trail and don't have an update for the conditions. It's challenging, but not too bad. Further in, and up beyond a small meadow covered in low lying blueberries to a site that was perched overlooking the lake, where you are able to take in all its’ beauty. A very very well maintained trail. Sunday morning, we set out around 9am and found that everyone had cleared out. Don't let that keep you from the hike though! Copper Lake isn't much farther, and upon arrival I was greeted with lots and lots of overnight hikers. Would have done it but it was getting late. The trail offers a number of activity options. Further up the trail near the bend in the lake there are a few more sites and one or two places big enough for a 2 person tent closer to the shore. Nestled away in the stunning landscape of Castle Crags Wilderness, Heart Lake is the definition of a hidden gem that's worth seeking out. They seemed to be the worst at Big Heart Lake. Unfortunately, we hit snow just before Copper Lake and turned back before it got too deep.
