The concept known as "12/2/1" had 12 Naval Reserve VP squadrons (later increased to 13 Naval Reserve VP squadrons) residing under two commands: Commander, Reserve Patrol Wing Atlantic (COMRESPATWINGLANT) and Commander, Reserve Patrol Wing Pacific (COMRESPATWINGPAC), both under the control of one central Flag Officer authority, Commander, Naval Air Reserve Force (COMNAVAIRESFOR). 10 July 2003: A ground mishap and subsequent interior cockpit and cabin fire is sustained by VP-62 P-3C BuNo 163005 during routine servicing of the aircraft's oxygen system.
